Katie Miller, an Algonquin Business grad, is excited to use her skills to help start-ups and entrepreneurs come into their own through her job at The Hub.
“It’s a space to expand and network,” Miller explained. “And access to a community of like-minded people.”
The Hub Ottawa has 300 members and provides desk space and workshops, located downtown on Bank Street. It the local branch of an international company that helps a large network of unique businesses and individuals, with locations from Tokyo to Bucharest.
It hosts a range of entrepreneurs, including Eric Chan and John Wiseman, both of whom graduated from the bachelor of information technology program at Algonquin and Carleton University.
Chan, also known as eepmon, is a graphic artist and was drawn to the international nature of the Hub, since his membership allows him walk in and work in any of the plethora of Hub offices around the globe.
Wiseman uses the Hub’s office space to run his business, VeganCuts, which ships vegan snacks and cruelty free beauty products across North America through a monthly subscription.
Miller returned to the college on March 5 to promote The Hub for Incubatorfest 2015, a gathering of students, prospective entrepreneurs and the organizations that want to further their ideas.
The speakers were from a handful of different incubators and accelerators, which are companies that nurture and support start-ups to help them take off. They offer various services and incentives like financial injections, office space or access to large networks of industry professionals.
Other incubators took a different approach to The Hub, like Venus Cybersecurity, who was represented at the event by Jeffrey Tracey.
Venus is a not for profit organization that provides cyber security solutions for many different organizations. After a careful screening process, they connect start-ups with investors and potential clients as well as offering seed funding at different stages in the process.
They also offer six months of intensive mentorship, to ensure a profitable future for the ventures they take on.
