Ottawa mayor, Jim Watson, has promised to improve road safety if he is re-elected after door-to-door visits highlighted this as a top issue. Watson’s plan would involve dedicating 15 police officers to traffic and speed violations, doubling fines in high-risk school zones, and redirecting funds raised from red light cameras into road safety. Watson’s plan also includes the hiring of 56 additional paramedics over four years to decrease emergency response times.

NAFTA negotiations continue with the deadline fast-approaching. Negotiators are still at odds on issues such as the U.S. demand for increased access to Canada’s dairy markets, dispute resolution and American tariffs. Trump threatens to exclude Canada from the agreement if the deal isn’t signed by midnight EDT on Sunday.

Workers are digging a mass grave after an earthquake and tsunami hit Indonesian city, Palu, on Friday evening killing over 800 people. Rescuers continue to search through debris for survivors but the death toll is expected to rise into the thousands. The mass grave will hold at least 300 bodies and burials will occur as soon as possible for religious and health reasons.
