Various singing acts graced the stage in the Algonquin Commons Theatre Dec. 5 to woo an audience and potentially record labels.

The lower sections of the theatre was mostly full for the Ottawa edition of Talent Nation, a touring talent showcase that provides an outlet for local talent to show off their skills.

There was a palpable feeling of anticipation in the crowd of 200 before the show started. A family-friendly affair, it attracted those of all ages.

The tour made a stop in Hamilton and the next day they were down in Toronto. Each location featured talent from the local area.

“I like seeing the talent at the college,” said Terry Bishop, a 38-year-old electrician attending with his family. “I am a big fan of America’s Got Talent; I also watched Canada’s Got Talent, but that show only lasted one season I think.”

With a name like Talent Nation, one would be excused if they thought it was going to be a variety show. But the show only featured singers and songwriters from Ottawa.

“I was kind of disappointed that there wasn’t more variety,” said Kate Naylor, 27-year-old alumni of the spa management program. “For some reason I assumed it would be a variety show, but I did still have a lot of fun, there is definitely a wealth of talent here.”

The acts varied in age. The first performer, Victoria Rose, was 12 years of age, while the rest of the show featured college-aged performers. The company website lists the ages of performers as being between 12 and 25.

The company behind the Talent Nation shows helps connect their talent with representatives in the music business. They introduce them to individuals from record labels and other talent producers. The show is more about showing off skills, it is also about networking.
