The Algonquin Thunder volleyball team pulled off the home victory against the Durham Lords Jan. 18, winning three of the four sets.

The men pulled off the first set with a score of 25-17, with a long and grueling second set being taken by the Lords 30-28.

The Thunder seemed to calm down after the second set, and took care of business in the third and fourth sets, winning 25-17 in the third and 25-16 in the fourth.

The Thunder, now 8-4 on the season, hope to carry this momentum into upcoming games.

“We had a really good attitude coming into it and we were really focused,” said right and left side hitter Richard Bucard. “Although the Durham Lords aren’t at the top of the pack of the east, we still came in with the mentality that we would treat them as any team.”

The men still have lots to improve going forward but coach Mohamed Shaheen likes the progress the team is making.

“We’re happy for the points; we had some changes in our rotation and it’s affecting us a little bit. Some players are not playing their positions, just trying different positions, so that’s why we were at some point struggling. But it takes time until they adapt and adjust and hopefully, it works for the best,” said Shaheen.

Although the Thunder men were scrambling around at times trying out different positions, they still found a way to get the job done.

The passes were solid; bumps were on point and hits were usually sent ferociously inbounds where the opponent couldn’t get to it.

The Algonquin Thunder next played the Loyalist Lancers Saturday, Jan. 19. Watch this space for coverage of that game as the team hopes to continue the momentum built by this win to extend their win streak to two.
