The Algonquin Students’ Association is announcing its latest contest this fall, with prizes that will spark the interests of Ottawa Senators fans and Algonquin swag seekers.

The Algonquin Proud video contest, which challenges all students to submit a video on the SA Facebook page, opened on Sept. 16 and closes on Oct. 25. Students are encouraged to illustrate why they are proud members of the Algonquin community and provide onlookers with some creative and inspiring material.

Michael Kokich, an outreach coordinator for the SA and contest organizer, admits the panel of judges will soon be determined, but asks students to “submit a video that will inspire people.”

“At the end of the day, we’re looking at quality content that’s both fun and inspiring,” Kokich said. “I can’t tell someone why they’re proud, but I can ask why.”

A panel of judges from the SA will determine the first place winner from the lot of submissions on Oct 26. The grand prize winner will receive five tickets to an Ottawa Senators home game.

Andrew Roeske, a second-year student in the business administration program, is excited about the Senators ticket package despite Daniel Alfredsson’s trade earlier this year.

“As an Ottawa native, I root for the team, not the player,” Andrew joked.

Finding the appropriate video equipment may be difficult for students on a tight budget, but Kokich encourages students to use any smartphone, digital camera or professional camera.

“It’s about quality content of the video” Kokich said. “It is up to the student to decide what they’re comfortable with.”

Second-year Algonquin College student Cory Columbus says it will be fairly easy for him to rent camera and video equipment. As a student in the game development program, Cory is positive that he has access to most of the technological equipment he needs.

The second runner-up, which is determined by the online community vote, will receive Algonquin swag from Connections or the SA office.

According to Kokich, “people will have the chance to vote on their favourite video. All you have to do is enter the contest page and hit ‘vote.’”

To submit videos, the SA asks students to upload their pieces on YouTube, Vine, or Instagram and post the link on the contest entry page. Fans can vote once a day on their favourite entries, meaning that students are permitted to vote every day until Oct. 25.

Kokich firmly believes in the student base and the wider Algonquin community.

“I love the community and I want to see why students are proud to be a part of it” Kokich said.

“Even if you are new to the school or a returning student, all submissions are welcomed.”

The winning videos will be posted on the Algonquin website following the event to showcase to current and prospective students.

Official rules and terms are also listed on the event website for any further information.
