Algonquin’s Food Cupboard is helping ensure that no student goes without this holiday season.
The Food Cupboard continues to meet the demand for those at the college struggling to put food on the table, says co-ordinator Skye Sullivan.
“We’re still sending out the word for donations to keep coming in,” says Sullivan. “We’ll be open up to Dec. 24 at noon for any students who aren’t going home.”
Since classes got back into full-swing on Sept. 1, there have been 189 food orders filled by students at the college. This means that there has been nearly 430 people who have directly benefitted from the Food Cupboard through family members and dependants.
The Registrar’s Office has been a keen supporter of the Food Cupboard since its grand-opening on March 12 earlier this year. Associate registrar Lynn Schumann, says they have had a good uptake in the month of December.
Fundraising initiatives in past years at the Registrar’s Office have seen emergency food cards handed out to students, a Christmas luncheon0 and involvement in the United Way campaign.
“Every year we try to fundraise and weave Christmas and charitable activities together,” said Schumann. “In the past, before we had the internal foodbank, we had taken donations for the foodbank in the city.
“We try to keep things focused on the students first,” said Schumann.
St. Louis Bar & Grill has partnered with Algonquin in accepting non-perishable donations throughout the month of December.
Donations can also be dropped-off at the Students’ Association, Registrar’s Office or at the Food Cupboard office located in C-building, room 050.
