The Algonquin Thunder women’s volleyball team made quick work against the Fleming Knights Jan. 26.

The contest was the second of back-to-back home games for the Thunder, in which they came into this game as fresh as can be, only having played three sets out of the possible five the night before against the Canadore Panthers.

Many of the starters such as Rylee Leger and Breeane Scheerhorn were awarded rest, allowing for other players to shine.

Elizabeth Coakeley stepped up, offering up six kills on the night — a kill is an attack by a player that is not returnable by the receiving player of the opposing team and leads directly to a point or loss of rally. Tatiana Weissflog had six kills of her own and Marylin Bonheur added five kills to the tally.

The women played well. However, the playoffs are a different animal, and with just three road games before the start of the post-season, the Thunder must continue to tweak and perfect their games.

“I’d say our serve receives and getting our serves in too,” said Weissflog on corrections they need to make. “We’ve been missing quite a few. I think at one point in the season we were first for missed serves, so it would be good to get those in.”

The women showed the depth of their team in this game, capitalizing on many of the mistakes the Fleming Knights made.

Head coach Everton Senior liked the way the women played in this game but he knows they can do much better.

“We still have a lot of work to do. We still have some things we have to clean up on and tighten up. But today was a good day, we got the bench in and we got the starters a lot of rest so that was key. But we still have a lot of to do, to get ready for our crossover match,” said Senior.

He mentioned the crossover match against the teams from the west, who have proven to be very powerful.

They play their next game Feb. 1, against the Georgian Grizzlies and the Thunder hope to carry the momentum they built on the road.
