When a Czech Republic native came to Algonquin this year, he never thought that he would be breaking a world record as part of his campaign for vice president of the SA.

But that’s exactly what 24-year-old Thomas Kolafa did March 18.

Kolafa was high-fived 3,009 times over seven hours in the Student Commons by staff and students, breaking the previous record of 2,164 according to the Guinness Book of World Records.

“Breaking the record is nice,” said Kolafa, a first-year business management and entrepreneurship student.  “But the main point is to energize the campus,”

Kolafa said although his goal was to break the record, he was most pleased to see how he was able to affect people.

“I made a lot of people smile,” said Kolafa.  “But they made me smile even more.”

He works hard to bring Algonquin together as a college and unite everyone.

“I would consider him a workaholic,” said Gabriel Loranger-Gagnon, a classmate of his.  “He’s always striving for something.”

Paul Junior Koni, another classmate of Kolafa, agrees that he is hardworking and always wants to help.

“I think he wants everyone to connect and network with each other,” said Koni who helped Kolafa with breaking the record.  “He really cares about the school.”
