The Algonquin Thunder men’s soccer team lost 2-1 to the Centennial Colts on Friday, dropping their early-season record to 1-1-1.

Marco Natoli scored the lone goal for the Thunder after an ugly turnover from Colts goalkeeper Chimdubem Oneyka. Oneyka botched a goal kick around 55’, putting the ball right into Natoli’s feet mere yards outside of the penalty area instead of downfield. Natoli then fired a strike into the bottom right corner to cut the Colts’ lead to 2-1.

Liam Cox scored both goals for the Colts just seven minutes apart. The first came at 40’ off a header inside the penalty box and the second came at 47’ off an accurate strike to the bottom left corner.

The game was evenly matched for most of the first half until the two Colts goals seemed to take some wind out of the Thunder’s sails. Natoli’s goal gave the team some life but the Colts weathered the late-game push to hang on for the win.

The Thunder’s next game comes today at 3:15 p.m. against the Durham Lords before a rematch against Centennial next week.
