For some students, studying full time, hanging out with friends, living on their own and having a job would be enough to keep busy.
But not for tourism and travel student Lori-elle Burch.
Burch, an international student from Bermuda and the president of the International Student Club and an active International Student Mentor.
She spends her time helping organize events to bring international students together.
“I don’t do it for recognition,” said Burch. “I do it to help others.”
But she was indeed recognized for her hard work Jan. 29 when Algonquin and the Ottawa Senators named her a Community Hero of the Game.
“These are all people who are connected to the Senators or Algonquin,” said communications officer at Algonquin, Phil Gaudreau. “People who have a real connection to their community.”
Michelle Cameron, a manager at International Studies Integration, nominated Burch for her work within the club.
“Lori-elle welcomes (students) to the International Studies Club and helps them make social connections to help them feel part of the Algonquin College community,” said Cameron in an email.
Burch was one of many donors to raise money to help to a Japanese orphanage after the 2011 tsunami by making paper cranes, which were sold for donations.
Cameron is still extremely proud of Burch and her achievements and activism within the club.
“If a student is in need of help, Lori-elle is always there,” said Cameron in an email. “She has a kind and generous heart.”
