A former Algonquin student who spoke at the college in March of 2014 has been arrested and charged with terrorism-related crimes.

Awso Peshdary, 25, has been charged with participation in the activity of a terrorist group and facilitating an activity for a terrorist group. The RCMP took Peshdary into custody earlier today.

Photos of Peshdary speaking at the Algonquin College Muslim Students’ Association’s Islam Awareness Week in March 2014 are circulating on Facebook and social media outlets. Peshdary studied in the social services worker program at the college.

The ACMSA president, Adam Tulul, didn’t respond when contacted by the Times. The group has not updated their Facebook page since May 2014.
