Algonquin College President Cheryl Jensen issued a statement on Thursday, Jan. 17, to students regarding the 10 per cent tuition cut, which was proposed by the Ontario government earlier in the week.

“We will continue to work with the government to find ways that they can assist us to help them achieve their priorities,” Jensen said in the statement. “We will also collaborate to ensure that our learners acquire the hands-on experience that will be essential in future economies.”

The Progressive Conservative government is planning to cut tuition by 10 per cent for the 2019 – 2020 school year and freeze the amount the following year.

“At this time, we estimate that the 10 per cent decrease in tuition will result in a $9-million shortfall to the college.” Jensen said in the statement.

Jensen will continue to work with the Students’ Association in making future adjustments to campus fees for the various clubs, and services as well as transportation offered by the college.

Jensen believes that the affordability and accessibility of the students are “of great importance for our learners and their families.” Although she does not have answers at this moment, Jensen is working with the Algonquin College’s Leadership Team to meet the needs of students.

“New choices for students regarding those fees will likely mean some changes,” Jensen said. “We will assess the situation in more detail in the coming days.”
