A student carves her pumpkin for the competition.

The AC Hub was filled with spooky music and the smell of pumpkins as students participated in Algonquin’s annual pumpkin carving contest.

About 20 people attended the annual contest (in at least its 4th year), held from 12 to 2 pm on Oct 30.

Marina Milette, a second-year student in the interactive media development program, had actually attended the event three years running and last year came in second place.

Millette carved a tree into her pumpkin as her entry into the contest.

“I found a pattern for a tree online, and then I started drawing it. But obviously I can’t replicate it so I added things.”

Ben Dinh, the AC Hub’s Events Officer, who, despite his title co-ordinates events for both the Hub and the Student Support Services department says the events are held as a way of “getting students into the Halloween spirit.”

The pumpkin carving contest isn’t the only seasonal event the hub is putting on.

“One of our upcoming events is the tree lighting event which happens in December,” Din said.

The tree lighting, done in conjunction with the SA, also brings a visit from Santa Claus to the college and tons of tasty treats for the participants.

The winner of the contest was Jessica Kim, who won a $50 gift card to Connections. Milette, while she did not win, came second for the second year in a row.
