Better known as “D’Dawg” to students and faculty alike, Derrick Bowes, owner of the D’Dawg Cafe, has become an valued part of Perth campus life.
Offering fresh meals individually cooked by request, he takes pride in his food service.
“There’s one class that doesn’t get a lunch break,” Bowes said,” So I came up with a plan.”
Bowes lets students order early and delivers the meals directly to the students in class. Much to the teachers chagrin at times.
Among his patrons is student Ryan Carnagie who regards Bowes as “a super, awesome asset” to the campus.
It’s the personal touch Bowes adds to his service that has sets him apart . Whether it be serving meals to the classroom, butter tart birthday cakes, or checking to see if the meal was improvable, Bowes goes that extra mile.
“I try to get to know every student by name,” Bowes said. Pointing to various students around the cafeteria he described their lives and aspirations.
His generous spirit hasn’t gone unnoticed either.
The tips he receives are dedicated to various charities or students in the community. Twice a month donations go to his favourite charity Youth Action Kommittee located in Perth. Recently $110 dollars was donated to the Canadian Cancer Society Pigs of Hope campaign. He gives credit for the donations back to the students in thankful posts on the bulletin board.
“The students are the ones who gave me the tips,” Bowes said.
His daughter, Savannah Bowes, has been working alongside her father during the winter months.
“This is what he’s like every day,” she said with a laugh. “He’s so fun to work with. He should be on a reality show.”
In a way he already has.
Recently, Trailer Park Boys actors Randy and Mr. Lahey gave a show on site. Students regaled while Bowes jumped on stage, joining in on the show. He was presented with a certified Trailer Park Boys Supervisor assistant after his participation.
With his gregarious personality and generous nature Bowes has become an asset to the community.
