Students whose parents never attended college had a chance to mingle and network at a networking event in the Student Commons Tues. March 25.
Hot 89.9 DJ Scott Rush hosted and emceed the event that helped students whose parents may not have attended a post-secondary institution and, in consequence, never got the opportunity to teach their children what college life is.
College life can be overwhelming to students who never got the opportunity to get a heads up from their parents about how different college can be from high school.
1st to Attend, an organization within the college dedicated to helping “first-generation students” get accustomed to college, put on the event to help students interact with others who may be having troubles getting accustomed to life at college. Activities such as taking photos of each other, interacting with students success specialists and getting career advice from the Employment Support Centre
Though it seemed to get students interacting, Shayna Langlois, a part-time interior design student at the college enjoyed the event but hoped there would have been a little more.
“It definitely wasn’t what I was expecting, I was hoping it would be more of a networking event.”
She wasn’t the only one confused with the event as Rush from Hot 89.9 emceed the event as a graduate from the college and, though he added a bit of celebrity touch to the event, he wasn’t a first-generation student.
Regardless, students were all smiles as the event offered valuable information on how to be successful in college and free food and drink are never a bad thing.
