David Tshimanga scored another basket for Thunder against the Durham Lords on Nov. 9.

The Algonquin Thunder men’s basketball team slid by with a win against the Durham Lords on Oct. 9 with a score of 78-83.

Simon Desta led the way with 27 points and four assists. Dwain Clare Jr. supported with 12 points, five rebounds and one assist.

The game was a physical one for both teams. Algonquin had the first quarter at 14-19 then let the Durham Lords take the lead at 42-43.

“Defensively we got to be better, we made some shots when it counted at the end, but we got lucky,” said coach Trevor Costello. “They were just playing physical, so they deserve their fouls, but I mean that helped. In the end, we could have executed a little better but were just lucky to get away with a win tonight.”

Thunder grabbed 20 points in the third quarter, leaving the score at 62-59 for Thunder. In The fourth quarter they scored 21 points compared to the Durham Lords’ 19 points.

“I think we have to continue to play as a team, play unselfish ball, swing the ball, get good clean shots if they fall they fall if they don’t they don’t we can live with that,” said Dan Stoddard, forward. “If we play selfish ball and we cost too many turnovers because of it or missed shots because of it then it’s on the individual. I think they all know that in there.”

The season just started, leaving the team with a lot of room to grow and learn from their mistakes.

“As we continue to grow as a team and continue to play through the season hopefully it gets better across the board,” said Stoddard.
