Karen Young is the graphic designer at the college’s Print Shop. She’s in charge of all the promotional material, and event-specific banners for college events.

But Young and her colleagues do more than that.

“We have been involved a fair bit with the department in hospitality and tourism,” said Young. “We’ve helped them come up with some of the packaging for the pieces they’ve come up with, like the Dirty Duck soap and the labels for their jams and honey.”

Young was involved in the piece for the U-Pass promotion and the card design.

“It’s really quite diverse because departments need different things at different times,” said Young.

However, the Print Shop doesn’t just fill Algonquin needs. Companies hire them for external work such as book covers and calendars.

As a graphic designer, Young is always looking for something new to catch the eyes of students and staff.

“I work in conjunction with the people bringing the information to me, so they’ll work on the text that they need to draw in the clientele,” said Young. “With design, you’re trying to give a visual impact to go with it.”

The staff Print Shop is located in A-190. That’s where banners and promo for the college, individual departments, material for convocation and the layout for the Centre for Continuing Online Learning catalog come from.

“I’ll do anything that comes down for promotion of internal things,” said Young. She does a lot for ancillary services.

Algonquin’s ancillary services includes the Print Shop, bookstore, parking, and food services. Their mandate is to localize consumption on campus in order to maximize financial support for the college.
