They came, they saw, they cheered…and booed.

Algonquin students made their presence known at the Canadian Tire Centre during the Nov. 21 Ottawa Senators game against the Philadelphia Flyers.

Students were given a chance to attend the game at a discounted rate by entering a promotional code with Capital Tickets.

With the discounted rate, upper bowl seas went for as little as $30.

Those who wanted to get the close-up view could spend $67 on a ticket in the lower bowl.

Many students took advantage of the opportunity to see an NHL game for such a cheap price.

But not all of them were Sens fans.

Cole Johnston, a student in the electrical engineering technician program, is a Toronto Maple Leafs fan who decided a Saturday night of pucks and pints was a good idea.

“A couple of friends asked me to come out,” said Johnston. “They’re Leafs fans and told me to wear Leafs attire. I can’t say no to a night of beer and hockey.”

Johnston suggested the college might be onto something with the idea of a student night at Sens games.

“I think it’s a good opportunity for students to get out and enjoy some good hockey.”

Riley Evans, a student in the public relations program, agrees.

“I’m having a lot of fun, it’s great,” said Evans. “I think it’s awesome of the school to give students a chance to see a Sens game for such an inexpensive price.”

“I’m a diehard Sens fan. To take in a game for an inexpensive price, it includes a $10 food voucher so it’s basically a $20 game, it’s too good to pass up.”

To top things off, students were treated to an Ottawa win with a final score of 4-0.

Evans also highlights the effect student nights could have for the Senators’ organization.

“It’s a good idea by the organization too,” said Evans.

“Getting students out with their friends gives them a chance to make memories now and become lifelong fans.”
