An Ottawa car dealership and Algonquin’s student radio station CKDJ joined forces to raise money and collect non-perishable food items for the college’s food cupboard.
Kirk Morrison and Stephanie Laurin, both of the radio broadcasting program, were manning the CKDJ booth March 25, playing music and broadcasting live on location, urging listeners to drop in and donate whatever they could.
Jim Durrell’s Capital Dodge also helped offer incentives to those who donated, including Fiat branded mugs and grocery bags. There were also two grand prize draws, one for tickets to any general admission Yuk Yuk’s comedy show and one for a $250 gift card to Loblaws.
Capital Dodge supplied two Fiats, a 500 and a 500L, to try and see how much of the cars they could fill with donated food.
Andreanne Budd, a Fiat specialist from Capital Dodge , said the dealership was also raising money and food for the food cupboard.
“It’s a great cause,” said Budd. “Not many people knew that one out of 10 students need the food.”
She also said that due to the food drive, it raised a lot of discussion at the office. The drive reminded the employees of their college days.
“Everybody donates canned tuna, but nobody donates any mayonnaise to make tuna salad,” she said laughing.
The 500L Fiat’s trunk was nearly stuffed with donations by the end of the day.
